The state of Colorado is known for its fickle weather. “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute” That statement couldn’t be more true this week. Seven days ago, the area broke the record for the most days reading 90-degrees or higher in a summer (60). Today a handful of Peary alumni got to enjoy (in the words of Ken Thomas, ’81) “snow crab.”
Two years ago, we suffered in the sun and heat of the 1st crab feast. Last year, we were protected from the sun by a large tent covering. This year the tent covering kept us protected from the rain and yes, snow. Forecasters are calling for up to 4 inches in the area by Sunday morning.
Probably not too many people can say they’ve cracked crabs during a snowfall. We can.
As Steve Tobin (spent half a year at PHS in ’66, would have been class of ’69) noted, “It must be getting colder. I couldn’t see my breath when I arrived. Now I can!” But 16 Peary West students (along with some of Nikki Wantling’s friends) braved the rain, snow and cold to keep a tradition going.
Those in attendance were: David Miller ’69, John Jones ’71, Kay Coleman Smith ’72, Denise LaBrec Kepler ’73, her sister Michelle LaBrec ’83, Kathy Tobin Udy ’73, her brother Steve Tobin, Laurie Stahl ’79, Bill Baltzell ’80, Tina Swanabori Fredo ’80, Janet Peters ’80, Ken Thomas ’81, Ann Noble ’86-Rockville HS, Ron Bostwick ’77 and our gracious host, Nikki Wantling ’85-Wheaton HS.
Perhaps if we schedule a group snowshoe trip in February it will be sunny and mild!
