Joe Piccioni’s son has graduated from Towson University

Joe Piccioni (1975) and his wife Dina are proud to announce their son Joey, a Marine veteran, has graduated from Towson University with honors. Joey’s degree is in exercise science. Joey will be attending Salisbury University and will obtain his Master’s Degree In Applied Health Physiology

John Robert Fitzpatrick, Class of ’70

Robert FitzptrickJohn Robert Fitzpatrick, age 62, died at The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. John fought a courageous battle against ALS.

Born April 29, 1952, in Washington D.C., he lived many years in Frederick, MD and Ranson, WV, before recently moving to Myrtle Beach SC. John retired from Giant Foods after 32 years.

Survivors include his beloved and caring girlfriend, Kathy Yanklowski, of Murrels Inlet, SC. Son, James and his wife Gia Fitzpatrick of Brunswick, OH, Daughter, April and her husband Milton Aquila of Winchester, VA. Granddaughters, Sophia and Marisol Aquila, and special grandpuppy Kiwi Fitzpatrick, Sister, JoAnne and her husband Larry Grove of Kearnysville WV, Brothers, Michael Fitzpatrick of Shady Side, MD, Bob Fitzpatrick of Chester, MD and Jay Fitzpatrick of Beltsville, MD. Many nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends including those from MUSC. John was preceded in death by his father, James V. Fitzpatrick, Sr. and Mother, Marguerite A. Bowman.

There will be no formal service.

William Christopher “Chris” Derby, Class of ’75

Chris Derby

March 18, 1957 – February 23, 2015

Chapel Hill

On the evening of February 23, Chris passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in the comfort of his home. In addition to being a devoted family man, Chris was actively involved in the community. Chris was well-known for his positivity, leadership, boundless energy, generosity and integrity. As an active member of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and board member at Extraordinary Ventures, Chris supported fellow business owners and members of the community. In addition, Chris owned The UPS Stores at Meadowmont and Fordham Boulevard and was a partner in Baguettaboutit.

Chris was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Marcy, at Catawba College; they were married in 1984. Chris was a devoted and loving husband, “Cool Rocking Daddy,” caring son, fantastic brother and genuine friend to many. His children, Brett, Kelly and Torri, brought out the best in Chris as he excelled at fatherhood, supporting their every endeavor from school to scouts to sports. Chris loved classic rock music, making mix CDs, the beach, performing magic to delight others, working in his yard, being the king of the grill and planning gatherings with his life-long friends.

Chris is survived by his wife Marcy, his son, Brett, 27, and his daughters, Kelly, 25 and Torri, 19, his sister, Julie Derby Jaecksch of Martinez, CA, and his brother, Lee (Shelley) Derby of Damascus, MD, mother-in-law/father-in-law, Patricia and Melvin Hook of Pittsburgh, PA, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lisa Hook and Peter Gillon of Washington, DC, Dave Hook of Emeryville, CA, Polly Hook and David Lawlor of Irvine, CA, John and Katherine Hook of Pittsburgh, PA, and Chris and Tammy Hook of Cleveland, OH, as well as eight nieces and nephews. Chris was predeceased by his mother, Catherine L. Derby.

Chris brightened each and every day with his enormous smile, opening his heart to family, friends, employees, customers and community members. Chris touched many lives and all who knew him will continue to strive to emulate him and carry him in their hearts and memories always.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 27, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael Street in Chapel Hill. In lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests that donations in memory of Chris be made to Extraordinary Ventures, 200 S. Elliott Road, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.

Leonard Maloney

Leonard J. Maloney, Jr., 65, of Germantown, MD passed away on January 5, 2015. Son of the late Leonard J. Maloney, Sr. and Mamie Ray Maloney. Survived by his wife, Loretta Frederick Maloney, as well as two children, Leonard J. Maloney III of Germantown, MD and Natalie Maloney of Rockville, MD. Also survived by three grandchildren, a sister, Patricia Fischetti of Virginia, and a brother, Robert Maloney of Friendship, MD. Predeceased by a sister, Judy Sisson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2pm at the Roy W. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Rd. Laytonsville, MD 20882. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Roeder Rd. Suite 800, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Kenneth Patrick Ganey

Passed away October 3, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents A.J. “Bud” and Elaine (Sawaya) Ganey and brothers Gregg and Phil. Kenny was born and lived his entire life in the Washington area. He graduated from Robert E. Peary High School. He loved music, and he was always eager to learn. He is survived by his sister Patti; nieces Sarah, Lydia and Kelly; nephew Evan, and many other family members whom he loved dearly. Jennifer Lea Schwartz (1955 – 2014) – Class of ’74

Jenny Lea Schwartz, of Harwood, MD, died of cancer on September 19, 2014 at age 58 in Baltimore, MD at Joseph Richey hospice. Born Janice Schwartz, Jenny changed her name when in her 20’s. This eccentric bohemian loved being involved with Groundhog Day festivities every year in Punxsutawney, PA when not performing energy work to help people and animals. She worked for the National Academy of Opticianry for ten years, rising from receptionist to Director of Education. She is predeceased by father Robert Allen Schwartz, Sr. and brother Robert Allen Schwartz, Jr. She is survived by mother Norma Jean Walker of Sligo, PA, step-mother JoAnn Schwartz of Portland, OR, half-sister Bethann Schwartz of Tacoma, WA, son Michael Connolly of Omaha, NE, and daughter Jessica Francis and grandson Patrick Francis of Kennesaw, GA. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at Mayo United Methodist Church, 1005 Old Turkey Point Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
